Opposition MPs on Monday staged a boycott of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) assembly on the Waqf (Modification) Invoice, accusing the committee of straying from its ideas. The boycott was sparked by a presentation given by Anwar Manippadi, former Chairman of the Karnataka State Minorities Fee and Karnataka Minorities Improvement Company, which the MPs claimed deviated from the dialogue on the Waqf Invoice.

In accordance with the opposition members, Anwar Manippadi’s presentation included unwarranted allegations in opposition to the Karnataka Authorities and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, information company ANI reported. They argued that these feedback weren’t related to the committee’s agenda. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant criticised the proceedings, stating, “Now we have boycotted as a result of the committee shouldn’t be functioning with the ideas and norms of the committee. The Waqf (Modification) Invoice was initially launched within the Lok Sabha on August 8 and subsequently referred to a JPC following a heated debate. The committee, tasked with refining the proposed amendments, has been participating in a sequence of casual consultations with numerous stakeholders, concluding on October 1. These consultations are geared toward enhancing the invoice’s provisions, which embody digitisation, stricter audits, transparency measures, and authorized frameworks to reclaim illegally occupied Waqf properties.

The Waqf Act, initially established in 1995 to supervise the administration of over 600,000 registered Waqf properties throughout India, has confronted criticism over allegations of mismanagement, corruption, and encroachments.
