New Delhi: A number of Opposition events voiced their dissent over the Chief Election Commissioner and different Election Commissioners (Appointment, Situations of Service and Time period of Workplace) Invoice, 2023, saying that it subjugates the EC to the authority of the chief and seeks to “crush the spirit of democracy”. The Invoice, which was handed within the Rajya Sabha through the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament, goals to control the appointment and repair phrases of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs).
Expressing apprehension over the Invoice, Congress chief Randeep Surjewala stated the federal government introduced the brand new laws to nominate a Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners of their very own selection and “crush” the autonomy of the Indian democracy and electoral equipment.

“Modi Authorities has attacked the democracy of India. The autonomy, fearlessness and equity of India’s democracy and electoral equipment have been crushed by a bulldozer. Modi Authorities is passing a regulation in Rajya Sabha as we speak to make the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners of the Election Fee of India, a ‘pawn Election Commissioner’. There was a time when EC meant ‘Electoral Credibility’, as we speak it means ‘Elections Compromised’,” ANI quoted Surjewala as saying.
“They are going to appoint a Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners of their very own selection. They are going to run their Election Fee as per their want. They are going to put together an electoral checklist as per their want…That is maybe one of many largest blows to democracy hurled by the Modi Authorities within the final 9 years…We are going to take it to the tip and the wrestle will proceed from Parliament to the streets,” he added.
Aam Aadmi Get together member Raghav Chadha stated the Invoice seeks to overturn a Supreme Courtroom judgment which is an “insult” to the highest courtroom. “This isn’t a Invoice, it’s a bulldozer by which the BJP-led central authorities has ended the impartiality of the ECI. This Invoice is against the law. You can not overturn the SC judgment with out altering the idea of it. That is towards the fundamental construction of the Structure. The essential construction of the Structure is of free and truthful election,” Chadha advised reporters.

“Does the federal government not belief the Chief Justice? Does the federal government not belief the Supreme Courtroom? As we speak is a blot on Indian democracy,” PTI quoted Congress MP Pramod Tiwari as saying.
All India Trinamool Congress member Jawhar Sircar alleged that by bringing the laws, the federal government is making an attempt to decrease the standing of the CEC and different election commissioners from that of a cupboard secretary.
